Cubic yards are a volume measure. Material weight and compaction are separate assumptions, so use the dedicated material calculator when you also need tons or bags.

Request local project quotes

Tell us about your soil / mulch / rock delivery project. ProjectMetrica uses WiserLeads, the Triares/homeyou lead platform, to check whether a participating buyer is available for your project.

  • No purchase is required.
  • Availability and matching depend on ZIP code and project details.
  • ProjectMetrica may receive compensation for a qualifying accepted request.

The form is submitted to ProjectMetrica first and, when an eligible WiserLeads opportunity is accepted, the required lead data is sent to Triares/homeyou. TrustedForm is used to create a consent certificate for the form session. See the Privacy Policy.

Formula & assumptions

How the cubic yard calculator works

Cubic feet = length × width × depth in feet. Cubic yards = cubic feet ÷ 27. The optional allowance is applied before the final yardage is shown.

For a better estimate

  • Use average depth when the project is not perfectly level.
  • Separate irregular shapes into rectangles and combine the volumes.
  • Round the final order to the supplier’s actual selling increment rather than ordering an impossible decimal quantity.

Common questions

Frequently asked questions

How do I calculate cubic yards?+

Multiply length by width by depth in feet to get cubic feet, then divide by 27.

How many cubic feet are in one cubic yard?+

One cubic yard contains exactly 27 cubic feet.

Can I use a cubic yard calculator for gravel or mulch?+

Yes. The volume calculation is the same; only weight, compaction and ordering assumptions vary by material.
