Mulch Calculator
Estimate mulch for flower beds, tree rings and landscape areas. Enter the total square footage and planned depth to compare bulk cubic yards with bag quantities.
Enter project details
Planning estimate only. Confirm local prices, supplier specifications and site conditions before ordering.
Your estimate
Compare bulk and bag pricing using the same volume. Existing mulch, bed shape, material settling and supplier delivery minimums can change the practical order.

- No purchase is required.
- Availability and matching depend on ZIP code and project details.
- ProjectMetrica may receive compensation for a qualifying accepted request.
The form is submitted to ProjectMetrica first and, when an eligible WiserLeads opportunity is accepted, the required lead data is sent to Triares/homeyou. TrustedForm is used to create a consent certificate for the form session. See the Privacy Policy.
How the mulch calculator works
Mulch volume (ft³) = area (ft²) × depth (in) ÷ 12 × allowance. Cubic yards = cubic feet ÷ 27. Bags = cubic feet ÷ bag volume.
For a better estimate
- Measure separate beds and add their areas together.
- A 2–3 inch finished layer is common for many landscape beds, but plant and site needs vary.
- Existing mulch can reduce the amount of new material required, so measure the depth you actually plan to add.

Frequently asked questions
How many cubic yards of mulch do I need?+
Multiply the bed area by the mulch depth in feet, then divide cubic feet by 27. The calculator does this automatically.
How many bags are in a cubic yard of mulch?+
One cubic yard is 27 cubic feet. Divide 27 by the bag volume; for example, a 2-cu-ft bag gives a theoretical 13.5 bags per cubic yard.
How deep should mulch be?+
The appropriate depth depends on the material, plants and existing mulch. Avoid piling mulch against trunks or stems.
