Gravel Calculator
Use this gravel calculator to estimate how much gravel you need for a driveway, path, drainage area, patio base or landscape project. Enter the project dimensions and depth, then adjust density and local price if your supplier provides more specific values.
Enter project details
Planning estimate only. Confirm local prices, supplier specifications and site conditions before ordering.
Your estimate
Order bulk gravel by supplier selling unit and use the supplier density when converting volume to tons. Compaction, gradation and moisture can change the final load quantity.
Request local project quotes
Tell us about your gravel / pea gravel / fill work project. ProjectMetrica uses WiserLeads, the Triares/homeyou lead platform, to check whether a participating buyer is available for your project.
- No purchase is required.
- Availability and matching depend on ZIP code and project details.
- ProjectMetrica may receive compensation for a qualifying accepted request.
The form is submitted to ProjectMetrica first and, when an eligible WiserLeads opportunity is accepted, the required lead data is sent to Triares/homeyou. TrustedForm is used to create a consent certificate for the form session. See the Privacy Policy.
How the gravel calculator works
Volume = length × width × depth. The calculator converts inches to feet, applies the waste allowance, converts cubic feet to cubic yards and estimates tons using the selected density.
For a better estimate
- Measure irregular areas in smaller rectangles and add the results together.
- Use compacted design depth when gravel will be mechanically compacted.
- Supplier density can vary by stone size, moisture and gradation, so use a local tons-per-yard figure when available.

Frequently asked questions
How much gravel do I need?+
Multiply project area by gravel depth to find volume, then convert that volume to cubic yards. Use supplier density when you also need a tonnage estimate.
How many tons are in a cubic yard of gravel?+
The conversion depends on gravel type, moisture and compaction. A supplier-specific density is more reliable than a universal conversion.
Should I add extra gravel?+
A modest allowance can cover grading, compaction and measurement variation, especially on irregular or sloped sites.
