Keep the units consistent. If you measure in inches, the result is cubic inches. Divide cubic inches by 1,728 to convert to cubic feet.
Do not fill to the rim in the calculation
Containers normally need some headspace so water can soak in instead of running immediately over the edge. If a pot is 14 inches tall but you only plan to fill 12.5 inches with mix, use 12.5 inches as the soil depth.
The plant and its root ball also displace some potting soil. A large transplant going into a large container can reduce the amount of new mix required.
