Mulch coverage per yard depends entirely on the depth of the layer. One cubic yard contains 27 cubic feet, so it can cover about 324 square feet at 1 inch deep, 162 square feet at 2 inches, 108 square feet at 3 inches or 81 square feet at 4 inches.
Those figures make a useful quick-reference chart, but the best estimate still comes from measuring the real bed area and the amount of new mulch you actually want to add.

Mulch coverage per yard chart
| Mulch depth | Approx. coverage per cubic yard | Approx. cubic yards per 1,000 sq ft |
|---|---|---|
| 1 inch | 324 sq ft | 3.09 yd³ |
| 2 inches | 162 sq ft | 6.17 yd³ |
| 3 inches | 108 sq ft | 9.26 yd³ |
| 4 inches | 81 sq ft | 12.35 yd³ |
The table assumes a uniform finished depth. Real beds are rarely perfectly flat, so the calculated value is a planning quantity rather than a guarantee.
How mulch coverage is calculated
One cubic yard equals 27 cubic feet. If the desired depth is 3 inches, convert 3 inches to 0.25 feet. Divide 27 cubic feet by 0.25 feet and the result is 108 square feet of coverage.
You can also work in reverse. Multiply bed square footage by depth in feet to get cubic feet, then divide by 27 to get cubic yards.
How much area will 2 yards of mulch cover?
Double the one-yard coverage at the same depth. Two cubic yards cover about 648 square feet at 1 inch, 324 square feet at 2 inches, 216 square feet at 3 inches and 162 square feet at 4 inches.
For 5 cubic yards, multiply the one-yard coverage by five. At 3 inches deep, five yards covers about 540 square feet.
Existing mulch changes how much new coverage you need
Coverage charts are often misused because homeowners calculate the full finished depth rather than the depth being added. If a bed has about 2 inches of serviceable mulch and you want a 3-inch finished layer, calculate only 1 new inch. At that depth, every cubic yard covers about 324 square feet.
Check several locations because old mulch can settle unevenly or decompose faster in wet or sunny areas.
Example: 750-square-foot bed
A 750-square-foot bed at 3 inches deep requires 750 ÷ 108 = about 6.94 cubic yards. At 2 inches deep, the same area requires 750 ÷ 162 = about 4.63 cubic yards. At only 1 inch of new depth, it requires roughly 2.31 cubic yards.
This is why changing mulch depth by a single inch can make a large difference on a big property.
How many bags cover the same area?
First calculate the cubic feet needed. A cubic yard equals 27 cubic feet. If one yard covers your target area, that is equivalent to 27 one-cu-ft bags, 18 1.5-cu-ft bags, 13.5 two-cu-ft bags or nine three-cu-ft bags. Round up to a whole bag where needed.
If you are deciding between bagged and delivered mulch, see Mulch Bags vs. Bulk.
Why actual coverage may vary
- Bed surfaces may slope or contain low spots.
- Existing mulch may be thicker in some places than others.
- Material can settle after spreading and watering.
- Tree rings, plant crowns and edging reduce the true area being covered.
- Measurement approximations can add up across several landscape beds.
A small practical allowance is reasonable when the area is irregular, but accurate measurement is more useful than automatically adding a large percentage.
Common mulch coverage mistakes
- Confusing square feet of area with cubic feet of material.
- Forgetting to convert inches of depth into feet.
- Using a 3-inch coverage figure for a 1-inch refresh.
- Assuming one bag covers the same area regardless of bag size.
- Rounding the area too aggressively before calculating the final volume.
Frequently asked questions
How much does one yard of mulch cover at 3 inches?
About 108 square feet.
How much does one yard of mulch cover at 2 inches?
About 162 square feet.
How many yards do I need for 1,000 square feet?
About 3.09 cubic yards at 1 inch, 6.17 yards at 2 inches and 9.26 yards at 3 inches before any allowance.
For irregular beds or several areas, the ProjectMetrica Mulch Calculator is faster than using a coverage chart alone because it converts your exact measurements into both cubic yards and bag quantities.
