Sand Calculator
Use this sand calculator to estimate sand for leveling, backfill, play areas, masonry preparation and landscape projects. Enter length, width and depth, then adjust density and bag size if you are comparing bulk sand with bags.
Enter project details
Planning estimate only. Confirm local prices, supplier specifications and site conditions before ordering.
Your estimate
Sand density changes with material type and moisture. Use supplier values for bulk tons and verify the specified sand type before ordering.

Tell us about your soil / mulch / rock delivery project. ProjectMetrica uses WiserLeads, the Triares/homeyou lead platform, to check whether a participating buyer is available for your project.
- No purchase is required.
- Availability and matching depend on ZIP code and project details.
- ProjectMetrica may receive compensation for a qualifying accepted request.
The form is submitted to ProjectMetrica first and, when an eligible WiserLeads opportunity is accepted, the required lead data is sent to Triares/homeyou. TrustedForm is used to create a consent certificate for the form session. See the Privacy Policy.
How the sand calculator works
Sand volume = length × width × depth. The result is converted to cubic yards, multiplied by density for tons and divided by bag volume for approximate bag count.
For a better estimate
- Choose the sand type that matches the project specification rather than selecting by price alone.
- Bulk density changes with moisture and material gradation.
- If the sand will be compacted, calculate from the required finished depth and allow for compaction or supplier guidance.

Frequently asked questions
How much sand do I need?+
Calculate project volume from area and depth, then convert the volume into cubic yards, tons or bags using the supplier’s selling unit.
How many tons are in a yard of sand?+
There is no single exact conversion because moisture and sand type change density. Use the supplier’s tons-per-yard value when possible.
Can I use this for paver bedding sand?+
Yes for a general volume estimate, but the required bedding thickness and sand specification should follow the paver system instructions.
